Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle 1957
When Disneyland opened in 1955, Sleeping Beauty: The Movie was still a few years away (released on Jan 29, 1959). In an effort to link the upcoming film and the theme park icon this brochure was created. It contains production stills from the yet to be released film, as well as, a great photo of Walt Disney in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle.

Disneyland: Then, Now, and Forever Updated ed. 2008
An updated version of the very well written 2005 edition. Basically, references to the 50th anniversary are removed and new attractions (Johnny Depp in Pirates and Finding Nemo) are added. Too many other small changes to mention here.

Disney Lost and Found 2008
As I commented before, I'm a fanatic for concept art and unproduced animation. So, when this book came out, I jumped on it right away. It's a little thin on text with the bulk coming in the introduction. The book also seems to focus on two unproduced films: Wild Life and My Peoples. It makes a nice companion to Solomon's other, more detailed book: Disney That Never Was: The Stories and Art of Five Decades of Unproduced Animation

The Disneyland Encyclopedia 2008
Another attempt to chronical the history of Disneyland in alphabetical order. This one comes off much better than the Disneyland Detective but not quite as good as Disneyland the Nickel Tour. The Disneyland Encyclopedia has over 500 entries from Adventureland to Yumz. Also, scattered throughout the book are various lists that no Disney fan can live without.

The Story Of Disneyland 1955
Disneyland is now open for business and we have the very first guide book. It's really more of a pamphlet than a book coming in at only 16 pages. Produced by Western Printing (the same people behind the The Little Golden Books) and it really does have the look and feel of the Little Golden Books with pencil drawings and water color pictures. The back of the book includes a very difficult to use grid map to Disneyland. Coming attractions feature the 650-room resort Disneyland Hotel.

The Art of Disneyland 1987
In honor of the closing of the Disney Gallery, located just above the entrance to The Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland, I've tracked down the pamphlet that was available during its inaugural season. After a brief introduction by John Hench, this book details biographies from several veteran artists. There's Harper Goff, Blaine Gibson, Marc Davis, Sam McKim, Herb Ryman, and Mary Blair. And, in a bit of irony, the last page details the original private apartment designs by Dorthea Redmond.

Walt Disney's Disneyland Pictorial Souvenir 1977
Same front cover as the 1976 edition, but back cover switches from concept art of Space Mountain to full-page nighttime shot. Another year of almost every section in the book getting at least one updated photo. (In the aerial photo of Main St. you can still see the America On Parade floats backstage. The parade stopped running in Sept. 1976). Photos of the Mine Train Through Nature's Wonderland are removed (due to construction of Big Thunder). New photos of the Matterhorn show increased snow coverage on the mountain. Space Mountain gets added to the Tomorrowland section. Main St. Electrical Parade returns to the Disneyland After Dark section.

Pictorial Souvenir of Walt Disney's Disneyland 1986
Numerous changes in just one year. The Golden Horseshoe Revue is replaced by the Golden Horseshoe Jamboree. While the text still says Country Bear Jamboree, the photos have been replaced with the Country Bears Vacation Hoedown. In Tomorrowland, the subs get painted Explorer Yellow, and the Monorail Mark V replaces the old bubble-top Monorail. Captain EO and Star Tours both get the full-page treatment. And, in the back of the book, Walt Disney World get reduced to one page.

Disneyland Pictorial Souvenir 1976
Quite a few changes since the 1974 edition. We get a new cover (still Sleeping Beauty Castle) and the back cover changes from America Sings to concept art of Space Mountain. Almost every section of the Park gets a few updated photos. Mr. Lincoln returns to the Guide Book after getting bumped by The Walt Disney Story, and Main Street Electrical Parade is removed (due to it's hiatus for America on Parade for the Bicentennial). America Sings is added to the Tomorrowland section.

Uncle Scrooge A Little Something Special 2008
As I've said before, whenever I think of Uncle Scrooge it reminds me of my childhood. Gemstone Publishing has put together a collection of Uncle Scrooge comics, starting with the master himself, Carl Barks, and up through Don Rosa. This is a great companion to Walt Disney Treasures - Disney Comics: 75 Years of Innovation.

Disneyland Pictorial Souvenir 1972
YADG: Yet Another Disneyland Guide. This time we feature the 1972 Guide book. Quite a few changes from the earlier version (1968) that I have (see below). A new front cover (Sleeping Beauty Castle) and back cover (Country Bears) are featured. The New Orleans section gets revamped as Haunted Mansion is added. Bear Country gets two full pages, and photos of The Indian Village are removed. The inside back cover now features Walt Disney World.

Disneyland Pictorial Souvenir and Guide 1968
The first guide book published after the death of Walt Disney. The cover features a photo taken by the National Geographic Society from 1963. If you look closely, some of the guests in the picture are holding the 1962 edition of the Guide to Disneyland. After using multiple formats for the guide books in the first decade of Disneyland, we now get locked into a format that will be kept for the next 20 years.

Disneyland Pictorial Souvenir 1980
Not a lot of changes between 1980 and the next earliest edition I have - 1978 . A minor change on Main St. as the Flower Mart gets a new photo. The biggest change comes in Frontierland as numerous photos of Big Thunder are added.

Collecting Disneyana Indentification & Value Guide 2008
Picked up another collecting guide. I believe this makes the fifth one in my collection. 240 pages jammed packed with color photos. Quite a few items I've never seen before. The book is broken into three major themes: Golden Years, Feature Films & Television, and Modern Collectibles. Each item listed contains a brief description and value (and the values are always open for debate and interpretation). I'm still waiting for someone to do a book like this solely devoted to Disneyland collectibles.

Walt Disney's Guide To Disneyland 1960
Changes are still coming to Disneyland. In the year since the 1959 edition, a new cover is chosen. The Fantasyland section gets some new photos, but removes the Midget Autopia. Frontierland loses Marshall Lucky and the Stage Coaches. Tomorrowland gets some concept art for the upcoming America The Beautiful show and some new Autopia cars. Coming Attractions features China Town.

Walt Disney's Guide To Disneyland 1959
1959 - A big year of change for Disneyland. While the cover is identical to the 1958 edition, we get numerous changes inside. Main St. gets a new aerial photo of Town Square and both Alice and The Columbia move from concept art to actual photos. A new center map is created. But, the biggest change comes in Tomorrowland where photos of all the new attractions have been added: Matterhorn, Monorail and Submarine Voyage. Gone are 20K Leagues, Flight Circle and the Viewliner. Coming Attractions features Edison Square.

Disneyland Pictorial Souvenir 1981
Only one major change from the 1978 edition that I have. The Frontierland section gets an overhaul as Big Thunder opened in 1979 replacing The Mine Train Through Natures Wonderland.

Disneyland Pictorial Souvenir 1974
The 1970s marked an era of laziness on Disney's part - The souvenir guide books got locked into the same format and picture selection for more than ten years with only minor changes from year to year. Between 1973 and 1974 these changes took place: The Columbia was added to the picture selection in Frontierland; Pack Mules are replaced by a photo the Keel Boats and the back cover becomes America Sings replacing the Country Bears.

Disneyland Pictorial Souvenir 1996
Well, I'm not quite sure if this souvenir book is from 1996. For some reason books from the 90s don't contain copyrights. So, it could be from 1995 and missing the 40 Years of Adventure logo, or even from 1997. Anyway, numerous changes from the 1993 edition. Indiana Jones gets a two-page spread; small world goes pastel; ToonTown goes from concept art to two-pages of photos, and gone are photos of Mission to Mars and the Sky Way buckets.

A Complete Guide To Disneyland 1957
Disneyland is just two years old, and already new attractions are being added. We get House of the Future, Tomorrowland Boats and The Viewliner. But, alas this edition of the Guide does not have any photos of these new attractions. But, on the plus side, we do get a lot of great color photos that were not used elsewhere. Check out this great quote listed under the Disneyland Data section in the back of the book: "The average cost of a visit to Disneyland is $2.29, which includes admission to the Park, rides, amusements, souvenirs, and parking."

Mouse Trap: Memoir of a Disneyland Cast Member 2007
There have been several books written about Disneyland from the Cast Member perspective. Randy Bright's brilliant Disneyland: Inside Story and Van Arsdale France's Window On Main Street. Kevin Yee (author of Magic Quizdom: Disneylandia Minutiae Semper Absurda) has penned a collection of his experiences working at the Happiest Place on Earth.

Pictorial Souvenir of Walt Disney's Disneyland 1989
Very similar to the 1987 Guide (posted below) except for the following changes: Splash Mountain gets a two-page spread; photos of Tomorrowland show the new color scheme for the People Mover (solid white with stripes on the side - matching the color scheme of the Monorail), and Star Tours includes actual photos instead of concept art.

Pictorial Souvenir of Walt Disney's Disneyland 1987
1987 - We're now three years into the Eisner era. Recent additions to the Guide Books include Star Tours and Captain EO. (Star Tours is so new that the pages basically include concept art only.) The photo style of these books starts to shift as more photos are posed.

Walt Disney's Guide To Disneyland 1963
Virtually identical to the 1962 Guide except for the following changes: The photo of the Motor Boats has been replaced by Snow White's Grotto and Wishing Well; Coming Attractions now features Pirates of the Caribbean and the list of attractions on the back cover shows the move of the Main St. Shooting Gallery to Adventureland.

The Disney Mountains Imagineering At Its Peak 2007
Jason Surrell is at it again. First, we had his faboulous book on the Haunted Mansion and that was followed up by his Pirates of the Caribbean book. His current book takes a look at all the Disney attractions based around mountain themes. All the classics are there (Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, Big Thunder, etc), but we also get a look at some mountains that never got off the ground (Candy Mountain, and Thunder Mesa). An excellent book.

Walt Disney's Disneyland A Pictorial Souvenir 1983
No, that's not a photo error. The covers of the 1983 souvenir book and the 1978 book are identical. As a matter of fact, the same cover was used between 1976 and 1983. The 1978 and 1983 books are almost identical except for the addition of Big Thunder and concept art for the new Fantasyland in the '83 book.

Walt Disney's Disneyland A Pictorial Souvenir 1978
1978 - The Disneyland of my teenage years. I remember being there on opening day for Space Mountain which is featured on the back cover of this book. This 1978 guide still features photos of Walt Disney in each land of Disneyland that were taken back in the early 60s.

Walt Disney's it's a small world 1964
Picked up a great guide to it's a small world. (Now that I'm a father, I really enjoy this ride.) But, this isn't just any guide - it's from the 1964/1965 New York World's Fair where small world made it's debut in the Pepsi Pavillion.

Disneyland Resort Remember The Moments 2005
My mailman has been busy this week. I picked up four more souvenir guides.
This edition is jammed full of photos from both theme parks. Pictures of Space Moutain show the newly re-painted white, but small world still shows the old pastel color scheme.

Walt Disney's Disneyland Pictorial Souvenir 1993
Somewhere in the 80s or 90s the picture style of these books changed. Early additions showed John Q. Public enjoying a day at Disneyland. In this book, it becomes more apparent that the pictures are staged. It's extremely obvious on the interior photos of the Matterhorn. Also contains photos of the other theme parks around the world.

Disneyland's Hidden Mickeys
All I can say is - "It's about time!" The Walt Disney World version is already on it's 3rd edition. But, now we west-coasters finally get a book to call our own. This is one thing (among many) that truly makes the Disney Parks unique. For those of you who don't know what a hidden Mickey is...it's a partial or complete image of Mickey the the Disney Imagineers have hidden throughout the resort.
Paperback: 95 pages.

Walt Disney's Guide To Disneyland 1958
1958 - Disneyland is still in it's infancy. This book is full of the usual fare, but also packs some rare photos such as Crane's "Fun With Water" display in Tomorrowland. Coming Attractions feature, The Haunted House (not a typo on my end - it says HOUSE in the book), Liberty Street, Undersea Voyage (which became the Subs), and something called Adventures In Science. I also have the 1959 insert which features the new additions to Tomorrowland including the Matterhorn, Submarine Voyage, Monorail and Motorboat Cruise.
Paperback: 27 pages.

The Art Of Pirates Of The Caribbean
I usually don't buy books based upon a single film, but I loved the Pirates trilogy, and I'm a sucker for concept art. This large, beautifully published coffeetable book is full of concept art and storyboards from all three films.
Hardback: 160 pages.

Walt Disney's Pictorial Souvenir Book of Disneyland 1965
Well, as I noted in the previous entry, I started collecting the guide books. Here's the book from 1965 - Disneyland is now 10 years old. Just like the guide from '62, Haunted Mansion and New Orleans Square are listed as coming attractions, but we also get concept art for the New Tomorrowland.
Paperback: 36 pages.
